Socceroos - I salute you!
I am deliriously happy. The Socceroos have advanced to the "Round of 16" of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
We entered this competition as the underdogs, and most had written us off, but the underdog is a role we excel in...it brings out the best in us. It allowed us to defeat Japan (3-1) and score those 3 goals in the final 8 minutes of the match. It allowed us to defend admirably against Brazil (who beat us 2-0). And finally, it allowed us to draw with Croatia (2-2).
Thank you Craig Moore for scoring our 1st goal against Croatia!
Thank you Socceroos for never giving up - and being able to bounce like kangaroos!
Thank you Harry Kewell for scoring the 2nd goal against Croatia that sent us through! (And for being named Man of the Match!)
And finally, thank you to the fans who never stopped believing!
Look out Italy...we're coming to get you!
(FIFA World Cup once again provided the treasure trove of photos!)

As soon as I saw that this game was over ... I thought of you. Way to go Australia!!! It looks like they'll be playing Italy on Monday. Let's hope for a tremendous match!

Now that the US is out of competition, I'll be rooting for Portugal and Australia to make it to the final game :-)

I wish the US had been so lucky (or talented). My friends and I had breakfast at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim and watched the US/Ghana & Italy/Czech games this morning - so much energy among all the fans there, even though things did not go our way. Way to go Australia!

Congratulations.
They did look great against the Brazilians. That was the only match I was able to catch. I have to buy a functioning VCR for the next round!

Ivonne, I thought of you when Italy got through too...I'm sorry we have to play each other so soon, but I'm sure it will be an exciting match :D
Elsa, It's a shame the US couldn't pull it together this time like they did 4 years ago...but I thank you for the support!
Amy, That's exactly what I love about the World Cup...countries coming together getting in the spirit of the event!
Thanks Kenju!
Prego, Welcome and I hope you get to catch a few more games!

I don't really follow football (I know! Sacrilege!) but yay for your favorite team winning! :) I understand that.

I don't suppose you felt for the US much. I just felt for Claudio Reyna who is much better than he looked on that play where he was stripped of the ball.

Congrats on the victory! Speaking of underdogs, where is Portugal on the World Cup poll? Here's hoping for a Portugal - Australia finals, via a Brazilian loss which would be nice. :-)

Great fun to be in the final 16. I had to guess that you'd win and qualify when I published my 'results' on Thursday!

We're stationed in Germany, everywhere it's all about the World Cup. When I was in high school our family hosted exchange students 3 from Brazil...I bought my boys the cutest Brazil outfits downtown last weekend! We're definately rooting for Brazil since the US lost or Germany since we are living here...I'll secretly be rooting for Australia too since they're an underdog! :)

Oh, I can't stand it VK. Only hours left to go. Must take to my bed with a bex! And unpatriotic though it sounds, I cannot stand to watch it. I suspect I'd end up in hospital, right next to my mum!! Fingers crossed, huh?
