If this is "Hell"...

...Then count me in!

These Hells are for looking at rather than relaxing in!

Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) in Beppu, Kyushu, was the source of the mysterious billowing steam in this post.

The basket in the shot above contains eggs...the boiling water cooks the eggs to make onsentama...a stinky (because of all the sulphur) but delicious delicacy!

The wooden post in the background says Umi Jigoku.

i've heard there are hot sand places in japan where people are "buried" in hot sand to relax...have you ever been there? it sounds fun.

I love your "guess the picture" games.

I definitely would have never guessed that one.

Bearette: The "sand baths" are also in Beppu...and yes I have partaken! I enjoyed the first 10 mins...but then it just got too hot and I was sweating like crazy and the sand felt heavier and heavier and I just wanted to get out (I only had about another 5 mins left at this stage!). The shower afterwards felt fantastic!

Carolyn: I do love to perplex...I'm glad you enjoy!

Enjoyed this one...even though I didn't get it right! Photos are lovely and vibrant. Can't imagine eating onsentama, though. Danish blue is about as stinky a food as I'll ever eat!
