M.V.E.M.J.S.U.N.?

The useful mnemonic above will no longer need to be learned by rote as, after 76 years of faithful service, Pluto is no longer considered one of the planets of our solar system. On August 24th it was reclassified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union(IAU). Poor little Pluto was only able to meet 2 of the 3 required criteria to remain classified as a planet, but fortunately avoided the indignity of being relegated to "Small Solar-System Body"!

Nasa has all the info!

Oh, and the mnemonic..."My Very Elderly Mother Just Sat Up Near Pluto"!

i just learned the mnemonic "my very excellent mother just served us nine pizzas" from another blog. i don't remember learning any in school, though...apparently we didn't have to memorize the order. poor pluto.

Bearette: I'm sure there's many variations of this throughout the world! It was an easy way to remember the planets.

i still have my high school term paper on the nine planets. Maybe I'll have to sell it on e-bay as a historical curiosity.

Michele sent me, Vernicious Knids. Howdy!

My own take on this is that it's about time the other 8 REAL planets don't have to cover for that sorry-ass Pluto. Always a bit too small to join in big planet games but wanting to keep up. Ha! Weinie little Pluto now has to sit at the kiddie table away from the adults!

Think of the bright side, Vernicious Knids. Maybe now, with this bit of tough love, Pluto will lift some weights, put on some muscle, and get back in the game! How's that for a lot of movie cliches?

ok, now for the mnemonic to make sense, we'll have to boot Neptune too. But we better be careful, some, as planet size goes, we're not all that substantial. Who knows, some scientist on Jupiter may be giving us the boot. Here from Michele's.

Will these mnemonics make sense now?

Sage: If we decide to downsize Earth, then I propose we start saying "My Vernicious Mother Just Sat Up Now"!

JLP: Lucky you have that starship to escape in!

I seem to recall our newspaper publishing several possible new mnemonics which leave Pluto out. I must remember to check. I think it's a bit sad - but there are two new candidates including Xena. Did they make planet status or are they mini planets like Pluto?

I never heard that one. I just learned the names insort of a sing-song pattern. I think Pluto should be grandfathered. after all, it met the criteria when it was discovered.

Catherine: From what I've read UB313 aka Xena, Pluto and Ceres are currently classified as dwarf planets.

Star: What a perfect name you have for this post! And it does seem unfair to be suddenly changing the criteria on Pluto...
