"Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" - ("Devils out, happiness in!")

Today is Setsubun which is the official start to Spring according to the Japanese Lunar calendar. Traditionally evil spirits were chased away by burning dried sardine heads and banging drums; now, thankfully, it's more common to throw roasted beans around instead. Afterwards you pick up and eat the number of beans that correspond to your age.
