Egri Var:

Egri Var (Eger Castle) is a stunning hilltop castle:

In 1552 Hungarian defenders temporarily halted the Turkish advance into Western Europe. During the seige the Hungarians drank red wine which stained their beards. The Ottomans thought they were drinking bull's blood. Thus Egri Bikaver (Eger Bull's Blood) wine was born.

The castle was first fortified in the 13th century after an early Mongol invasion:

The Ottomans returned in 1596 and captured the castle:

They were defeated in 1687:
